Greece is surrounded on three
sides by water – the Ionian, Mediterranean and Aegean
Seas – and more than 1,400 islands, making it a water
wonderland of a travel destination.
Key to any Greek holiday, though, is a visit to the
ancient capital of Western civilization, Athens. With
the Athenian, you will have an opportunity to delve
deeply into this timeless city's history and heritage,
as you participate in a guided tour and then make the
most of your free time here to become totally familiar
with the city and all it has to offer.
The Acropolis, itself, is worthy of a day's
exploration. At its peak is the Parthenon, the symbol
of Athens that can be seen from every corner of the
city. The Erectheion stands as counterpoint to the
Parthenon, held up by its columns carved in the form
of women. The third principal site of the Acropolis is
the Theatre of Dionysos, where the Greek tragedies
were performed. You might want to complement your
visit to the Acropolis with one to the Goulandris
Museum of Cycladic & Ancient Greek Art.
The islands of the Saronic Gulf are a short sail from
the capital and serve as havens for a quick getaway
for Greeks and visitors alike. You will visit the more
popular of these mini-destinations, including the
artists' colony of Hydra. Back on the mainland, you
might like to visit the "original" Athens, the
historic village of Plaka.
After a week enjoying the Athenian, you're sure to
return home a virtual Athenian yourself. |
